CrossLine

Frequently asked questions

Which PDF charts work?

A wide variety. CrossLine reads vector PDF charts from many designers and design programs, such as WinStitch, MacStitch, PCStitch and similar tools, and the "Pattern Keeper compatible" PDFs many designers sell. That includes:

  • multi-page charts, including pages that overlap by a few rows or columns;
  • charts numbered from the centre as well as from the corner;
  • colour charts and black-and-white symbol charts;
  • blended threads (two colours in one stitch);
  • half stitches, one diagonal of a square;
  • French knots;
  • legends written in other languages: thread numbers and symbols are matched, not English words.

Scanned or photographed charts are not supported. CrossLine reads the drawing and text inside the PDF; it doesn't do image recognition (OCR) on pictures of pages. If no chart can be read on the pages you picked, you'll see "Could not find any patterns on the selected pages."

Why do I sometimes have to arrange pages?

Big charts are split across several printed pages, often with a few repeated rows or columns at the edges. CrossLine joins them using the page order and the stitch numbers printed along the edges. When those don't line up, or a seam doesn't match, it asks you to check the layout on Arrange pages. See the guide.

Some symbols weren't recognised. What does "Set rest to gray" do?

If a chart symbol couldn't be tied to a thread from the legend, CrossLine lists it on Match missing colors so you can pick the floss yourself. Cross stitches, half stitches, backstitches and knots are listed separately. Set rest to gray assigns a grey placeholder to everything still unmatched, so you can start stitching straight away. The symbols still work for marking; only the colour is a placeholder.

Can I use it for backstitch?

Yes, properly. Backstitch lines are read from the PDF and tracked on their own Back tab, with their own legend and progress. Trace along a line to mark it; if you've only stitched part of a line, mark just that part and come back for the rest. Frogging works the same way.

What about half stitches and French knots?

Both are read from the PDF and marked on the Cross tab. A half stitch is one diagonal of a square: select its symbol and mark it like a full cross. It counts as half a stitch. A square split between two threads has a symbol for each half. French knots are the dots. In the legend they are listed under Knots; select one and the pencil marks those dots, not the whole square. See the guide.

Where is my data stored? Is there an account or cloud sync?

Your charts and progress never leave your phone. CrossLine has no account, no cloud, no analytics and no ads; the only time it talks to the internet is Google Play confirming your purchase. See the privacy policy.

Does CrossLine use AI?

No AI, now or ever. CrossLine reads your PDF with plain, predictable code: nothing is generated, guessed by a model, or sent to an AI service. The same PDF always gives the same chart, and when something can't be read, CrossLine tells you and asks you instead of guessing (for example on Match missing colors).

Can I back up or move my projects?

Not yet. Project progress isn't included in Android's automatic backup, and there's no export of progress yet, so uninstalling CrossLine deletes your projects. You can save each project's original chart with Download PDF (long-press the project). Your purchase is tied to your Google account and can be restored on a new phone.

Can I bring my progress from Pattern Keeper?

Yes: import the same chart, then long-press the project and choose Import Pattern Keeper progress…. See the guide.

How much does it cost?
